It will be held on Thursday, October 12, from 5:30 to 9:00 pm at the Hyde Park Golf &amp; Country Club in Cincinnati.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-0.5\">We are delighted to welcome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokoshiiki.com\/bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toko Shiiki<\/a> as our keynote speaker. A filmmaker, musician, and artist, Shiiki&#8217;s work intertwines various art forms to create narratives that are engaging and moving. But when I asked them what gives them joy in life, they told me music, coincidentally. And it became very much a music-related film. I can add Genki&#8217;s story, of course (he is also a part of the film, &#8220;Threshold&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>His personal growth has been remarkable in the ten years! (I shot Threshold in 2013, and the short film I shot during the recent trip was this year in 2023, so ten years apart!) So, I think both films fit the theme, &#8220;The Power of Music &#8211; Resilience, Community, and Personal Growth &#8211; Japanese Style.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re also pleased share two more wonderful Japan-related videos created by Toko Shiiki. The first is \u201cThe Story of Ikkyu,\u201d about a famous Japanese monk, created and beautifully narrated by Shiiki with voiceovers by Erik Santos and illustrations by the Japanese artist COCORO. You can watch the video here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second is &#8220;Hello Japan,&#8221; an educational tour of Japan. It was specifically tailored for Greater Cincinnati students but is suitable for people of all ages interested in learning about Japan as well as Cincinnati-Japan connections. Shiiki created this video in 2021 with the help of a generous grant awarded to the JASGC by the Japan Foundation. Watch the &#8220;Hello Japan&#8221; video here.<\/p>\n<p>Our Gala will not only feature Shiiki&#8217;s keynote but also a special performance by <a href=\"https:\/\/smtd.umich.edu\/profiles\/erik-santos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Erik Santos<\/a>, a distinguished composer, musician, and professor. Erik&#8217;s father was <a href=\"https:\/\/cuexhibits.wrlc.org\/exhibits\/show\/historic-music-of-cua\/biographies\/santos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosendo Santos<\/a>, an award-winning musician from the Philippines. <a href=\"https:\/\/jasgc.org\/ja\/events\/#!event\/2022\/5\/25\/film-screening-music-in-honor-of-asian-american-heritage-month-an-evening-with-toko-shiiki-and-erik-santos\">View our past event featuring Erik Santos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As we look forward to our Gala, we&#8217;re excited to celebrate the JASGC&#8217;s 35th anniversary with you.
