Kamishibai (Paper Theater)
What Is Kamishibai?
Kamishibai (紙芝居) means “paper theater.” It’s a traditional Japanese storytelling art that uses illustrated cards in a wooden stage-like frame. As the narrator tells the story, they slide the cards to reveal each scene—much like a live picture book performance.
Originally used by traveling storytellers in the early 1900s, Kamishibai combines visual art, spoken word, and performance. It captures attention through pacing, voice, and dramatic illustrations. Stories often reflect Japanese folktales, everyday life, or simple moral lessons for young audiences.
Kamishibai is a joyful, interactive way to introduce Japanese culture to kids and families.
