Shodo Workshop

What Is 書道 (Shodō)?

Shodō (書道) means “the way of writing.” It’s the traditional Japanese art of calligraphy using brush and ink. Practitioners use deliberate, fluid strokes to write kanji (Chinese characters) and kana (phonetic scripts), transforming language into visual expression.

Shodō is rooted in Zen aesthetics—focusing on balance, rhythm, and mindfulness. It’s not just about writing; it’s about the energy and intention behind each stroke. Shodou is still practiced in schools, art communities, and ceremonies across Japan today.
